Points North Alternative: Certified Payroll Without the Setup Fee
Points North's Certified Payroll Reporting is a real contractor-side platform — not an agency auditing tool. The question isn't whether it works. It's whether it's priced for your crew size.

Points North's Certified Payroll Reporting is a different kind of competitor from LCPtracker or eMars. Those are bought by the agency or prime that receives your payroll — they audit what you submit. Points North sits on yourside of the table: it's built for the contractor who has to produce the report.
So this comparison is honest about a different thing. It's not "wrong side of the table." It's a capable product aimed at a bigger company than the one Certiwage is built for.
What Points North actually does
Certified Payroll Reporting is designed for contractors working with prevailing wages. It stores and manages wage rates, performs custom calculations, imports hours from timekeeping platforms, outputs data back into payroll and accounting systems, and automates production of the certified reports themselves.
Its portal reach is a genuine strength worth naming plainly: the platform works with government and agency systems including LCPtracker, eMars, TRS, Elations, MD E-File, eCPR, and eComply. If your projects require submissions into several different portals, that breadth is real value, and Certiwage does not match it.
Points North also offers two service models: a self-service option with training and support, and a managed service where their team handles compliance end to end — sourcing and maintaining current prevailing wage rates, generating reports, and submitting them. For a contractor who would rather outsource the function entirely, that managed option is something no $29/month tool provides.
Where the difference actually bites: setup cost
Publicly reported pricing for Points North starts at around $175/month, with setup fees commonly listed between $995 and $4,995. Pricing is quote-based and changes, so treat those as third-party figures and confirm current numbers with Points North directly.
For a mid-size or large contractor, that is unremarkable — normal software procurement. For an electrician with a six-person crew and three prevailing-wage jobs a year, the setup fee alone can exceed what certified payroll costs them for several years. That gap is the entire reason Certiwage exists.

Be honest about when Points North is the right call
There are real situations where you should buy the bigger product, and pretending otherwise would waste your time:
- You submit into multiple agency portals routinely. Automated output into LCPtracker, eMars, Elations and the rest saves genuine hours at volume. Certiwage produces files; it doesn't push them.
- You want someone else to own compliance. The managed service is a staffing decision as much as a software one.
- You need rates maintained for you across many localities and classifications, rather than entering the determination on your contract.
- You need ERP and timekeeping integration so hours flow in and results flow back out automatically.
- Complex union agreements with multiple fringe funds and reciprocity rules across several locals.
Where Certiwage fits instead
Certiwage is deliberately narrower. It does the weekly job a small subcontractor actually has: enter your crew's hours and rates, get a correct, fringe-checked WH-347 and signed Statement of Compliance, and — on the Pro plan — a California DIR eCPR XML file for upload.
The parts we think are genuinely good regardless of company size:
- The fringe check runs before you sign.Cash plus bona-fide contributions is compared against the required package, and shortfalls — the number one audit finding — surface while they're still fixable.
- Overtime math is deterministic and unit-tested. 1.5× the base rate plus straight-time fringe, with double time and California's daily rules handled. Same inputs, same output, verified against the DOL's worked examples.
- You can evaluate it in four minutes. The free builder produces a complete, watermark-free report with no signup and no sales call — which is a fundamentally different buying experience from a demo-and-quote cycle.
The straightforward way to decide
Run one real week of your own payroll through the free builderand look at the output. If it is the report your agency wants and the fringe check catches what you needed catching, you have your answer for $29 a month. If you hit the edges — multiple portals, ERP integration, managed service — then Points North is built for that, and it's worth the call.
Certiwage is a document-preparation tool, not legal advice, and is not affiliated with Points North or the U.S. Department of Labor.
